Vikings Begin Season with Tie and Loss to UM-Flint

Posted by Brendan McCann on Sep 27 2015 at 05:00PM PDT

The Cleveland State Vikings began their 2015-2016 season attempting to start right where they left off from last year. Heading into the third year of the program, the Vikings went up to Flint, Michigan to take on the University of Michigan-Flint for a Friday-Saturday double header.

Game one on Friday night ended in a 4-4 tie after a crazy ending to regulation and overtime.  After UM-Flint scored a shorthanded goal with under a minute left in regulation to make the score 4-3 Flint, the Vikings had little time to tie the game up.  However, Nate Wilkie was able to knock the puck into the net with 30 seconds remaining to tie the game at 4, with assists coming from Ron Narolewski and Nate Curran.  After five minutes of scoreless OT, the game ended in a 4-4 tie.  Also scoring in this game were Mark Sharpnack, Curran, and Nikita Goldman, with assists by Greg Kacsmarik, Brendan McCann, and Jake Uhas.

Game two on Saturday night started off bad for CSU after UM-Flint scored 3 unanswered to make it 3-0 in the second period.  It remained that way until about halfway through the second when Brendan McCann scored off assists from Kyle Suts and Sam Eisler.  Flint was able to regain the three goal lead when they scored in the middle of the third period to make it 4-1.  However, the Vikings battled back as Greg Kacsmarik scored off an assist from Ryan Martin to cut the lead to 2 late in the third.  Despite the late-game push by the Vikes, UM-Flint was able to take this one 4-2.

The Vikings will head back up to Michigan to take on Lawrence Tech University this weekend with another two game series on Friday and Saturday (10-2, 10-3) at Crystal Fieldhouse.  Both games begin at 9:00 PM.
